Covid-19 & Business Interruption covers

Cover in standard insurance policies is usually triggered by damage to property and so in the majority of cases insurers are unlikely to be obliged to pay out in relation to a pandemic. However could the presence of a virus constitute damage?

In other cases a policy wording covers the insured’s inability to use the premises as a consequence of a government order following the occurrence of a notifiable disease at the premises or nearby, known as non-damage denial of access. Could such an extension apply?

Whether there is cover or not will depend on a number of factors though in all cases the specific wording of the policy is key. The range of wordings and types of coverage are sufficiently broad in the business interruption market that it is difficult to determine at a general level the degree to which any policyholder may be able to claim.

According to the Interim Chief Executive of the F C A, they believe that there are a number of policies where the insurer has an obligation to pay out and so we at Schofield Insurance Brokers would be happy to refer any potential claim to the insurer concerned on your behalf and offer support where we can.

If you have any queries regarding your own policy coverage please do not hesitate to contact either your own account executive on their usual number or the claims team on 0113 250 0377.

Recently we have been working with Safe Haven, a local Yeadon based charity.

Safe Haven provide support to the local community working alongside various support networks, such as Domestic Violence Teams, Children’s Centres, Mental Health Authorities and Social Services across Leeds, for families in desperate need.

Initially, we collected food donations for the Safe Haven food bank, following this Suzanne Mitchell responded to a Facebook appeal for baby equipment to help a young expectant mother. Within 2 days Suzanne managed to collect from the Bradford & Leeds community 5 prams, 10 + bin liners of baby clothing, baby monitors from a Nurse who works at the BRI, baby bouncers, moses baskets and various other items. You name it Suzanne picked it up, cleaned it and took it to Safe Haven. The new mum is now equipped with everything she needs for when baby arrives. All additional items will also be used by Safe Haven to help other people who are in need within the local community.

All staff then got on board and between them made donations to a Safe Haven shopping fund. Collecting £180 and armed with the following shopping list Rob Ryde went shopping!

  • Tinned Meals/Pies
  • Tinned Meat
  • Coffee
  • Hot Chocolate
  • Dilute Cordial
  • Carton Milk
  • Curry Sauce Jars
  • Rice
  • Cooking Oil
  • Sugar
  • Jam
  • Peanut Butter
  • Chocolate Spread
  • Dried Rice/Pasta Meals
  • Hygiene Products
  • Nappies

Rob managed to pick up 6 of each item on the shopping list and this was delivered to Safe Haven on Thursday 30th May.

We are proud to work with Safe Haven in these difficult times and all our staff agree that this support should continue in the future.

Extreme Heat: Are You Prepared?

Extreme heat can force the body into overdrive as it tries to stay cool through perspiration and evaporation. Heat kills by pushing the human body beyond its limits. In extreme heat and high humidity, evaporation slows, and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. During heat waves, which are extended periods of extreme heat often accompanied by high humidity, conditions can be dangerous and even life-threatening for people who don't take the proper precautions Most heat disorders occur because the victim has been overexposed to heat or has over-exercised for his or her age and physical condition. Older adults, young children and those who are sick or overweight are more likely to succumb to extreme heat. Conditions that can induce heat-related illnesses include stagnant atmospheric conditions and poor air quality. (read more) "Extreme Heat: Are You Prepared?"
